A while back the awesome Hungarian blog, Gyöngyike, hand some great instructions on covering a 6mm ball with peyote. What was so great, is that the exact number of bead were given, plus a table telling you how many rows and how many beads in each row, AND some great circular peyote diagrams, AND a great flat diagram of the same, And photos of the covered beads in different finishes, AND for both Japanese and Czech beads! You can't beat that with a stick.
| 8mm Peyote Covered Ball |
I'm still trying to perfect covering balls with peyote, so when I saw that the instructions for covering an 8mm ball were available I jumped right on it. You can see from my photo that I made numerous attempts, but no matter how hard I try I still end up with the same problem every time. I finally just called it a day.
As you can see from the first photo, I do great right out of the gate. In fact, I'm looking good all the way to the last three rows. And then it happens. SPACE. I can't get rid of the extra space between the beads in the last few rows. I tried, and tried and don't know what I'm doing wrong. I even tried it with an extra row in the middle thinking that might be the issue, but the beading ended up to long. I tried different 8mm beads thinking maybe they weren't true 8mm. Same problem as you can see in the photo below.
Usually I don't care to much, since most of the time I'm embellishing the ball so you can't see it anyway. But I have something I want to make and the peyote will show, so it really needs to be better than this.
Can anyone spot what I'm doing wrong? I'm pulling as tight as I can, honest!
8mm Peyote Covered Ball, conquered. (well, I did get it covered right???)
Hi Sweets,
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem myself. Can't figure out why. However, I did figure out a way to work around it so it comes out right. Instead of starting at one end and working across to the other, I make two separate halves, starting from the ends and working toward the center and then I insert the center bead inside and zip the two halves together around the middle. I've found it's a little bit more fiddly, but makes it look so much better!!
Hey Mandy, I have those same instructions, and plan on trying it myself very soon. I seem to say that alot, but I have so many things on my "to do" list. Are you pulling your tension too tight? because your increase and reductions are perfect. We are in a hotel tonight and have a 12 hour car ride tomorrow to get home, and I get to sleep in my own bed...I cannot wait. And then back to all my beads!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Can't help you. I will need to try the pattern. Did you try from my notes? (Which I had to correct the next day since I couldn't read my own notes.) I fixed the top problem by using netting at the end.
ReplyDeleteI can't test out your pattern as the link is broken.
ReplyDeletei wish i knew what the solution was so i could help, but i haven't a clue. sorry! i do hope you figure it out or someone has the answer and you share the secret.
ReplyDeleteHi guys! Sorry I fixed the link! Great idea with the two halves, I will try that! Thanks for the comments everyone!
ReplyDeleteI think I've made about two of these, and both times it was to embellish, so I wasn't very concerned with the base layer. I'll be looking forward to hearing if the two half thing worked for you. I think that sounds like a great idea too.
ReplyDeleteI don't have concrete experience with this specific project, but if you're using the correct number of beads from the original post - and your using truly 8mm beads - then could it be too much tension in the first rows? Maybe you need a little more space between your beads so that the "space" on your last rows is more distributed throughout the whole bead? You're right the first photo looks awesome - but maybe you're too tight with the tension....
ReplyDeleteHi Mandy
ReplyDeleteI seem to be having a problem posting a comment. Trying a second time here. Go back to Gyongyike's site. She has a solution to your problem and tried to comment on your site, but was unable to. I hope this one works.

Great blog about beads! :D
ReplyDeleteWorks for me without any problems, and I'm keeping it pretty tense. But what I did is that I peyote stitched each one of the halves separate, and then I joined 'em together over the 8mm bead.
ReplyDeleteThe same thing happens to me, I can't understand it either, it's the same bead counts. I think Beadknitter has the easiest solution.
ReplyDeleteDear Mandy,
ReplyDeletePlease check out the comments on GyönGYIKék for your problem. Originally I tried to post it here, but somehow it didn't work from my computer at home... :( Therefore I have written my answer in my blog, hoping you would drop in sometime. I have written a quite long explanation there for you. I hope, it will help you...
All the best,
